O.L.T.U.G. ~ History

The year was 1992 and slo-pitch boomed to a level that demanded more officials than the Durham Region could supply.

O.L.T.U.G. was conceived with a five-man crew. The original five were Pat Brown, Tasso Pernokes, Walt Tarasewizc, Bryon Graham and Ron Poulton.

These five had a wealth of experience. A plan to recruit umpires was put into action and the response was incredible. The Group achieved high membership with high standards. Our reputation spread across the province quickly due to our customer service policy and professionalism.

We knew that we would never umpire the American League or National League. This does not mean that we take our role any less. Umpiring is the most important and demanding partnership in all forms of the sport. If you believe that you can make a difference you will be a successful official.

With this philosophy and an awareness to be the umpire that we would have wanted to umpire our game when we played continues today.

O.L.T.U.G. has seen many officials retire over the years and miss them greatly. The good times, jokes and laughter continues at our Knights of the Round Table gathering at the end of a tournament. This is where our rookies learn about rules and handling situations.

We believe that umpires are made, not born. Our individuals have the right to fail, improve and achievement. The onus will always be squarely on the shoulders of the umpire to improve. Respect is earned, not given freely.

To all present and former O.L.T.U.G. officials, thank you for making the sport and umpiring part of your life.

May we continue to feel exhilaration when we say play ball or get that close call right!
